Switch and Spey Blanks
Switch and Spey Fly Rod Blanks — Two-Handed Performance
Built to cover water. Engineered to control it.
The Switch and Spey Lineup
Virgil Rod Company's Switch and Spey blank collection is purpose-built for rod builders and anglers who fish two-handed techniques — from delicate light-line switch presentations on intimate trout rivers to full Skagit and Scandi setups on big steelhead and salmon water.
These blanks are engineered with a refined progressive taper that loads deeply through the mid-section while maintaining a powerful butt for line speed and control. Tip recovery is crisp without being stiff, allowing for tight, efficient loops across a wide range of line systems and casting styles. Whether you're swinging streamers on a coastal run, high-stick nymphing a wide tailwater, or skating dries on a summer evening, this lineup has a blank to match the water and the technique.
Available in a range of lengths, line weights, and striking finish colors — including Metallic Satin Blue, Metallic Golden Olive, and Matte Black — each blank is as visually distinctive on the build bench as it is effective on the river.
Why Two-Handed?
Switch and spey rods open up water and techniques that single-hand rods simply can't reach:
- Extended reach — longer blanks keep line off the water and improve mending on wide, complex currents
- Reduced casting fatigue — two-handed leverage makes long days of swinging and casting far more comfortable
- Line system versatility — compatible with Skagit, Scandi, and integrated shooting head systems for maximum adaptability
- Superior mending — the longer lever arm gives you unmatched line control in varied river conditions
- Swing efficiency — cover more water per cast and keep your fly in the zone longer
Available Blanks
Switch and Spey blanks are available in a range of lengths and line weights to suit different water types and casting styles — from compact switch rods ideal for trout and light steelhead work, to full spey blanks built for big water and heavy Skagit setups. Multiple finish colors let you build a rod that's as striking as the fish you're chasing.
Build Notes & Recommendations
Two-handed rods reward thoughtful, balanced component selection:
- Grip: A full Portuguese cork upper grip with a fighting butt extension is standard for switch and spey builds. A shorter lower grip suits switch rods; a longer lower grip gives full spey leverage on bigger blanks.
- Reel Seat: A large-arbor compatible uplocking aluminum seat is essential for two-handed builds. Gunmetal or black anodizing pairs cleanly with Matte Black; gold or bronze hardware complements the Metallic Golden Olive finish beautifully.
- Guides: Oversized single-foot stripping guides handle the large running line loops of Skagit and Scandi systems. Snake guides throughout keep weight down and preserve the blank's progressive action.
- Thread: Deep olive, black, gold, and burnt orange all look exceptional on these finishes. A contrasting tip wrap and subtle accent wraps at the grip section elevate the finished build.
Who Is This Lineup For?

- Rod builders ready to take on their first two-handed build
